Clinical Supervision Training

“Clinical supervision is a disciplined, tutorial process, wherein principles are transformed into practical skills, with four overlapping foci:

      • administrative
      • evaluative
      • clinical
      • supportive”

(Powell, 2004)

Clinical supervision involves teaching students and supervisees how to develop as professional counselors. Therefore the supervisor must have the knowledge and skills to form an effective supervisory relationship, to teach and evaluate many areas of counseling, and to role model ethical and professional behavior. It requires an identity shift from counselor to supervisor as well as being able to balance responsibilities and roles of administrative supervision separate from clinical supervision.

Theses supervision trainings are offered to address some of the areas of knowledge and skills needed.

Trainings can be designed to provide the 20 hours now required by the Virginia Board of Counseling for supervisors. Please contact Charlotte to discuss your staff's needs.

1. Introduction to Clinical Supervision

This training provides knowledge and skill development regarding the supervisory relationship. It is for professionals who want to become supervisors or for new supervisors (2 years of experience or less). It also meets the criteria for supervisors in the addiction field who want to obtain a CCS from ICRC.

Learning objectives: (1) Increase knowledge about supervision theories and the roles and responsibilities for clinical supervisors (2) Increase knowledge and skills in evaluation of supervisees (3) Increase knowledge and skills in developing a supervisory relationship and teaching counseling skills (4) Develop a supervisory plan for ongoing professional development

Recommended hours of training: 12

2. Clinical Supervisors: Too Many Hats on One Head

This training is for supervisors who have several years of experience (3 or more). Content covers the issues that arise in balancing the needs of clients, supervisees and the agency. Case discussions of difficult issues that arise in the supervisory relationship help participants increase their skills in resolving dilemmas. Didactic and experiential materials help participants identify their own developmental issues as supervisors.

Learning objectives: (1) Identify developmental level as a supervisor and increase knowledge about how this impacts the supervisory relationship (2) Increase knowledge and skills in managing issues of power, transference, gender and cultural concerns and impairment issues with supervisees (3) Identify roles and responsibilities, potential conflicts and problem-solving strategies

Recommended hours of training: 12

  1. Ethical, Legal and Professional Issues for Clinical Supervisors

This training provides an opportunity to apply ethical principles to the clinical supervisory relationship. Ethical decision making in the supervisory process is discussed along with the Association of Counseling Educators and Supervisors (ACES) Code of Ethics. The format will be didactic materials and group discussions. This training also addresses the professional identity of clinical supervisors. Some of the topics for this workshop are: balancing client/supervisee welfare, liability issues, counselor vs. supervisor identity, confidentiality concerns and boundary issues. Participants will be asked to identify dilemmas in their current practice and to practice an ethical-decision making process. Recommended hours of training: 3 -6.

Learning objectives: (1) Increase knowledge of how to apply ethical principles and decision-making to the supervisory relationships (2) Increase knowledge about legal and other professional identity issues that are unique to the role of clinical supervisor (3) Identify current or potential dilemmas and practice problem-solving

Please note: This can be combined with sessions 1 or 2 to offer a 3 day Institute for Supervisors or it can be combined with Ethics trainings (See Link to Ethics trainings for sessions 2 and 3) for an Ethics Institute.

Logistics

  1. All trainings are delivered by power point along with other audio visual techniques. Group discussion is included in the three hour offering. Six hour offerings include case studies and more experiential components. All trainings have a bibliography which includes articles, books and websites.
  2. Fees are 850.00 a day. The fee includes:
  • One year of free consultation for anyone who participates in the training: If you want this as part of your contract you will need to be willing to provide me with a list of the names of the participants. If you want ongoing supervision for your supervisors, that will be an additional fee.
  • Prep time: If you ask for something other than these descriptions that requires more research, there will be an additional fee which is negotiable. For example, if you want me to train in a state other than Virginia on legal issues and do the research on the statutes and regulations related to clinical supervision that would be an extra fee.
  • Master power point which you agree is to be used only for the purpose of making handouts for this training.
  1. Travel expenses, lodging and meals are not included in the fee listed above.
  2. Participants: Not less than 20; not more than 50.
  3. Once we have agreed on the content, location, and date, I will send you a contract which includes all of the logistical information. In addition, you are responsible for providing an appropriate training location, enough handouts for all participants and the audio-visual equipment needed.
